This year’s show house, Witching Hour Farm, is a one-hundred-year-old, seven-bedroom home on eighty acres in the beautiful horse country of Woodbine, Maryland. The property was named for a favorite horse of a previous owner. The horse was born at the stroke of midnight (the witching hour) and the name evokes thoughts of magic and mystery.
Witching Hour Farm has a long history during which hundreds of prized horses have been bred, foaled, trained, raced, and shown. The farm was first owned by Thomas Henderson. He built the original house, barn and other outbuildings. The land was from Oakley Farm, the last of Warfield’s Forest, one of Maryland’s first land grants. Regan McKenney, the next owner, developed much of the currently existing farm, including the race track, race horse barn, tennis court, and swimming pool.
In 1971, Don and Jean Bradley purchased the farm and named it Witching Hour for one of their horses. They developed the farm for the purpose of breeding and training racehorses. Their names are well known in racing circles. The home is located at 15475 Old Frederick Road, Woodbine, Maryland. It is listed on the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties.
The 26th Annual Decorator Show House was held from September 18 through October 17, 2010 with Chairpersons Linda Farndon and Janet Kusterer. Over 4,000 guests toured the home.
