White Hall originally consisted of parts of the early land grants of Dorsey’s Search and Freeborn’s Progress. The house was constructed prior to 1822. The house was originally occupied by Col. Whitehall remained in the hands of Dorsey descendants until 1997. Col. Dorsey’s daughter, Mary Tolley Dorsey, married Thomas Ligon who served as Governor of Maryland from 1854 through 1857. The Ligons lived at Whitehall after his retirement. in 1997 the house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by Ridout Ligon Hains.
In 1948 Rear Admiral Hamilton Hains and Mrs. Hains lived at Whitehall until their deaths in 1990 and 1998 respectively. Mrs. Hains was Col. Dorsey’s great granddaughter. In 1997, 75 years of one family ownership came to an end when Hamilton Hains and Thomas W.L. Hains, Charles Worthington Dorsey’s great great-grandson agreed to sell Whitehall to Annamarie and William M. Hugel.
