Built in 1808, Mount Hebron is best known as the mid-nineteenth century home of Judge Thomas Beale Dorsey, who was primarily responsible in 1851 for Howard County becoming our twenty-first County. The story of Mount Hebron may have begun prior to 1808. Mount Hebron originally referred to a tract of land, was later adopted as the name of the stone dwelling standing today, this dwelling was possibly the original “Upton” built by John Worthington Dorsey about 1771-78. (Judge Dorsey’s Father) In such an event the date of the house would drop back to 1771-78. It is said that the property was part of the underground railroad offering safe haven for runaway slaves.
There were many owner changes until 1920 when H. Jones Baker, Sr. purchased the 200 plus acres remaining. Family members remained there until 1960 when it passed to the Mount Hebron Presbyterian Church. Services were held at Mt Hebron for several years before moving to larger quarters adjacent to Mount Hebron
