The site of the Elkridge Furnace Inn was a very busy seaport in the 1680’s. In 1744 James McCubbin built a brick house on the property which became McCubbin’s Tavern. Caleb Dorsey built a furnace on the land and rebuilt a house that had burned down. In 1768 a Dr. Howard rebuilt the furnace. McCubbin’s Inn continued to operate for travelers both by land and nearby river.
The property changed hands many times with the Ellicott’s operating the furnace in the early 1800’s. The furnaces made pig iron for guns during the Revolutionary War and the States Colonial Congress met at least once in McCubbin’s Tavern. The furnace ran until the 1868 flood destroyed it. The newest and largest part of the house was constructed between 1808 and 1815 and was tied in with the rear portion and the front section to make a large, three-part house. It now houses an upscale restaurant.
Elkridge Furnace Inn is located at 5745 Furnace Ave. Elkridge, MD. Elkridge Furnace Inn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. The show house ran from September 28 to October 27. Vera Leclercq was chairman.
