HEC, Inc. invited the family members and friends of the persons named on five benches around Ellicott City.

Hizzoner, unofficial mayor of Ellicott City, Ed Lilley. A true preservationist for many decades. Ed was instrumental in having the plaques made and installed on benches downtown. Without his efforts, these folks memories would not have the public presence due them. Thank you, Ed!

Jean O. Hannon, founder of Historic Ellicott Mills, Inc. and founding member of HEC, Inc. Jean won the “Paint It” program sponsored by Sears which began the restoration of Main Street in 1962. Son Mark Hannon represented his family.

Roland and Enalee Bounds founding members of Historic Ellicott City, Inc. together with Jean Hannon developed the guidelines for the Historic Preservation Commission still in existence today. Janice Muse reminisced about her years working with the Bounds.

Preservationists Roland and Enalee Bounds cofounded Historic Ellicott City, Inc. in the aftermath of Hurricane Agnes. From 1972 until Enalee's passing in 2021, Roland's in 2016, these two were the backbone of our organization. We remain eternally in awe and grateful for their tireless efforts.

Herb Johl, a past president of Historic Ellicott City, Inc. and the spearhead for the B & O Train Museum’s collections and restoration, among many other accomplishments was represented by his daughter Pam Colandrea.

John Slack and Family represented his mother, Doris Thompson Slack, a business person committed to her community throughout her lifetime. Joetta Cramm, chronicler of history in word, books and photographs and ground breaking author, Celia Holland, whose many books and articles pioneered the research of Howard County’s vast and deep history were honored by Fred Dorsey’s keynote address.

The benches are located at the corner of Main Street and Old Columbia Pike (Doris Slack, the Bounds’ and Joetta Cramm and Celia Holland)and also in front of the Ellicott City B & O Train Museum (Herb Johl and Jean Hannon). Take a look on your next trip downtown.
