Mill Town Tea: “Secrets of the Chocolate Maker” 3/27/2025

On March 27, 2025 speaking to a packed house, food historian, Tiffany Fisk presented “Secrets of the Chocolate Maker”.  Having made chocolate herself during her tenure in Colonial Williamsburg from the cacao pod, she was able to fully engage the audience in the tedious nature of its production.

Tiffany Fisk, food historian present the Secrets of the Chocolate Maker. Tiffany herself has made chocolate from cacao pods, an arduous process taking up to 6 hours by hand, dating back at least 5,300 years to the Olmec civilization. The attendees were captivated by her in depth presentation.

The audience was immersed in the history of chocolate making dating back 5,000 years!  Originating in Central America and now loved throughout the world, chocolate was first consumed as a beverage!

On display were antique chocolate pots in both silver and ceramics from board member Karen Griffith’s personal collection.  Local chocolatier, Sue Whary, owner of Sweet Cascades on Main Street, highlighted some of her creations and acted as a tea hostess, Thank You, Sue!

Sue’s participation was due largely to the gentle persuasions of HEC, Inc. and HCHS member, Xina Kojzar, a loyal patron of Sweet Cascades and self-confessed chocoholic.

This was our fifth joint tea, and the participants were clamoring for our next one.   The tea is held at the Museum of Howard County History, 8328 Court Ave, Ellicott City, MD, 11:30am-1pm as a partnership between Historic Ellicott City, Inc. and the Howard County Historical Society, typically the last Thursday of the month in which it is held.
